Ultimate Hydrating Hacks! (Happy DKAnniversary To Me)
Updated: Jul 25, 2019
One Year Ago Today:
I nearly landed in a coma due to a misdiagnosis of my pre-existing autoimmune disease.
Since last year, I have made it a priority to take better care of myself despite being unable to control my antibodies from seeing different glands as 'harmful.'
As a result of my most recent diagnosis, I have become incredibly prone to dry skin. This is one of the many symptoms of type one diabetes. Adding the harsh weathers of classic Upstate New York, my skin had really taken a beating during its first winter season.
Taking care of your skin and yourself, however, can pertain to everyone.
And although this cold, skin-damaging season may be behind us (but let's be real - it's April 29 and it snowed this morning), it is always a great idea to treat yourself and treat your skin to the hydration and overall care that it deserves.
Here are some incredible products that I, as a live-a-betic, would 110% recommend you keep on hand.
(All opinions are my own and none of these products are sponsored in any way, shape, or form)
1. L'Occitane Shower Gel
In lieu of body scrubs that ultimately leave you feeling like you are left with a layer of residue over the skin, this shower oil from L’Occitane lathers and hydrates with no feeling of having a second coating of product sitting on your skin, doing absolutely nothing to hydrate your skin. Aside from the specific type of shower oil shown above, I have also just received a sample of their almond shower oil and cannot wait to try it out!
2. Vitamin E Oil
You guys. You guys.
This product has been my absolute saving grace.
Trust me when I say: This stuff works far better than any other lotion or any other “diabetic” lotion out on the market. For someone like me, vitamin e oil absorbs immediately with no excess product. I instantly notice an immaculate difference within a matter of seconds.
Vitamin E has a reputation to reduce and potentially eliminate scarring; another common symptom of type one diabetics. If you get a scratch or cut, it will absolutely take forever to fully heal, if at all. After getting out of the intensive care unit last year, I had an itch on one of my toes that I wound up itching for approximately thirty-seconds. Those thirty-seconds resulted in a permanent scar on my toe just from that one moment. Vitamin E, however, has done the trick on reducing the scarring, little bit by little bit.
Not prone to dry skin?
And still reading this? Bless up. For those of you that fall into this category and are still reading, be sure to give yourself a pamper day by coating your feet with Vitamin E oil. From there, cover your feet up with a pair of fuzzy socks (or aloe-infused socks) for the ultimate overnight spa treatment.
3. Face Mist
Herbivore’s Rose Hibiscus Coconut Water Hydrating Face Mist is the perfect additive to products that you should have on hand. If you are anything like me and don't normally have a makeup routine but wish to at least keep your skin moisturized, this is - in my opinion - a great way to effortlessly make your skin glow. Not to mention, it smells absolutely amazing. The product has lasted me quite a while, but mostly due to the fact that I'm still trying to adult and become better with instilling a daytime/nighttime routine into my daily schedule. I sport the two ounce spray bottle, however, the company carries a four ounce option, as well!
4. Essential Oil Diffuser
Not only does my Vanity Planet essential oils diffuser diffuse my favorite blend of lavender, peppermint & lemon: this device doubles as a humidifier! This small but might product has helped me out a handful this winter and spring. I keep it on my nightstand so I can easily reach over, press the button, diffuse my essential oils, and crash for the night. As you may already be aware, there are a multitude of benefits to diffusing essential oils of any and all kinds! With the combo of lavender, peppermint and lemon, the benefits are as follows:
(SOME) BENEFITS OF DIFFUSING LAVENDER
- Reduce anxiety and emotional stress
- Protect against diabetes symptoms (read this on the interweb and literally el-oh-elled, so I figured I should share)
- Improve brain function
- Help to heal burns and wounds
- Slow aging with powerful antioxidants
- Relieve pain
- Improve Sleep
(SOME) BENEFITS OF DIFFUSING PEPPERMINT
- Relieves headaches
- Improves mental focus
- Clears respiratory tract
- Boosts energy
- Allergy Relief
- Releases tight muscles
- Sinus Care
- Improves Your Shampoo (stimulates the scalp - I swear by this method of hair care)
(SOME) BENEFITS OF DIFFUSING LEMON
- Cleansing and purification
- Cough Relief
- Calms stomach and relieves nausea
- Improves digestion
- Nourishes the skin
- Prevents malabsorption
- Decreases cholesterol deposition in the blood vessels and prevents heart disease
The classic approach to ultimate hydration: I like to switch things up by adding lemons & strawberries to my water to get me stoked for summer, as well as switch to sparkling now and again. This BKR bottle is great for me, as I am always running from workplace to workplace!
6. Lip Care
As a woodwinds player, this is an obvious essential item to incorporate into my routine. As a flutist, clarinetist and saxophonist, my EOS gift from Alex last Christmas is the ultimate soothing regiment after playing for several hours a day. I find it ironic that pit orchestra doubling season lands right in the middle of Upstate's dry, winter season.
The trick of the trade to getting into a regular routine of hydrating my skin: I keep my Ahava hand crème, my vitamin E oil and my diffuser on my bedroom side table so I don't have to go out of my way to add this into my regimen, but I've almost got it permanently etched into my nightly routine!
What I have particularly noticed with the Ahava hand cream from all others is the capability to immediately absorb into my skin in order to restore my skin's former moisture balance.
